Welcome to the 1870 Wedgwood
Collection of
Historic Inns

The 1870 Wedgwood Bed and Breakfast Inn of New Hope, PA is a gracious Wedgwood-blue colored Victorian "Painted Lady." This completely renovated Bucks County inn offers 18 upscale and romantic lodging rooms and Whirlpool suites plus meeting and event spaces -- all with modern hotel amenities in a historic setting. The Wedgwood, Umpleby and Carriage House are situated on over 2 acres of landscaped grounds with onsite parking, yet just steps from the vibrant river front artist colony of New Hope, Bucks County PA and neighboring Lambertville, NJ.
The inn's grounds once served as a Revolutionary War encampment site for General George Washington and 1200 Continental Army soldiers in December 1776, just prior to the famous Christmas Eve Crossing of the Delaware River. Then in the 1800s the house was a part of the Underground Railroad. On the National Registry of Historic Places, the Inn looks great in all four seasons and is the subject of choice for many photographers and painters.

ABOUT THE OWNERS

Early in their marriage and recent college grads, Nadine Silnutzer and Carl Glassman knew they wanted to own a Bed & Breakfast Inn where they could live and work together in a small town. In 1982 they jumped off their corporate career ladders and grabbed at the chance to purchase the Wedgwood Inn, which was located in their favorite Bucks County artists' community of New Hope, PA.

Prior to their purchase, The Wedgwood Inn was an old-fashioned rooming house with 6 bedrooms and shared hallway bathrooms. Some of the major upgrades Carl and Dinie added  include all ensuite private bathrooms, fireplaces, balconies, WiFi, and whirlpool tubs. In 1985 they purchased the adjacent 1833 stone manor house that included a storybook Victorian carriage house too.

After months of extensive renovations, they opened it under the name Umpleby House Inn, doubling the size of their lodging rooms.  In 2000,   the 1870 Wedgwood House unveiled its newly constructed addition at the rear of the house. This added several Whirlpool Suites on the second floor, expanded the common areas and breakfast room, plus created meeting and event space.

Dinie and Carl always felt very blessed to run a B&B where they can combine their love of people, hospitality and food, with their mutual interests in the arts, historic preservation, gardening and antiquing. Their award-winning inn is nationally acclaimed for its consistency of excellence in lodging services: warm, friendly hospitality, convenient location, colorful gardens, knowledgeable innkeepers, great made-from-scratch food and clean, comfortable and affordable upscale accommodations.

"We love innkeeping and we love New Hope...we were drawn here because we feel the greater New Hope/Lambertville area combines nature, history, independent shops and galleries, fine food and an active entertainment and arts scene that creates the perfect vacation spot in all four seasons."
New Hope was also an ideal place to raise their daughter, Jessica. She is often seen helping around the Inn on weekends and holidays as she pursues a professional career in social justice.
